With all the talk of "Going Green" these days, at least one company is making a serious effort to minimize their impact on the environment. The Audioengine A5 is made from a renewable resource, sustainably harvested Bamboo. Bamboo is an excellent alternative to hardwoods and the dark bamboo is not a stain or veneer, but achieved through a specialized heating process. As the bamboo is pressure heated, the sugar compounds inside the bamboo are "carbonized" which in turn darkens the bamboo to a rich caramel color. Awesome sound, great looks, eco-friendly, and panda-safe!

The top of Audioengine's speaker lineup, the A5 really blew us away! We have a soft-spot in our hearts for their over-performing A2 speaker, so we were expecting the A5 to really impress. Were we ever shocked! The A5 does everything that the A2 does, only better! The A5 throws a bigger soundstage with a more stable image; has a richer more natural tonal balance; feels like it plays a good octave deeper in the bass than the A2 and has a bunch of very cool features. Performance
The A5 throws a very good soundstage with surprisingly good imaging. The A5's custom tweeter cups focus their energy to the listening position, offering excellent inner detail and good sense of depth. The soft dome tweeter's sweetness is hugely appealing, making the A5s all-day listenable. The A5's custom-made Kevlar woofers have great speed and dynamic range, with a neutral tonal balance. The A5 produces bass that is firm and taut, if a bit rounder than might be found on more "audiophile" designs, but this is intentional, not a flaw, and makes most recordings sound a lot more exciting. Overall, considering the price and even taking the price out of the equation, the A5 offers a ton of musical satisfaction for a very reasonable price!

Build Quality
Audioengine designs and manufactures their own tweeters, woofers, and many other critical components. These speakers are not built with off-the-shelf parts but entirely custom-designed to Audioengine's specifications. The few parts that Audioengine does not build themselves is custom-made to their specs (parts such as toroidal transformers, magnets, and wiring harnesses, for example). The cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and crossovers are all painstakingly tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires much less power than other designs.

Cabinets
To minimize unwanted resonances and distortion, Audioengine cabinets have thick high-resin MDF walls with extensive internal bracing. Heavy internal sound-damping material is used to reduce unwanted sound reflections inside the cabinet. All cabinet edges are rounded which not only looks great, but also reduces high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. Each cabinet contains tuned, rear-firing ports. Both speakers are tuned and tested together and sold in pairs.

Drivers
Audioengine uses audiophile quality, ferro-fluid cooled, silk dome tweeters with Neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power and the edge-driven design gives very smooth response. The woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. Kevlar is a very strong material, which means the woofer retains its shape well even when being driven at high levels. The speaker materials and construction are robust enough to stand up to some serious thrashing, so speaker grills aren’t needed.

Power Amplifier
The powerful Class A/B amplifiers in Audioengine speakers are located in the left speaker and are a very conservatively rated all-analog design. All components are tuned together for each model, which provides a much more efficient system requiring less power than passive speakers and separate amplifiers. Circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for maximum mechanical shock protection.

Shielding
Both drivers are directly video shielded and allow the user to place the speakers within a few inches of a video monitor. This shielding also offers protection for hard-drive digital music players.
