Marantz MM7025: A Wonderfully Powerful and Affordable Power Amp

The MM7025 is a shockingly good sounding amp and the first affordable power amp Marantz has released in a very long time. Destined to become a classic, this amplifier of seemingly humble origin is born of kings. The MM7025's story is the stuff of legend and one which resonates for every audiophile. A bit over the top? Perhaps, but we're really excited by this amplifier and extremely grateful to Marantz for having created such a great amp.

The Legend
Scene opens in a darkened laboratory, with a furtive Japanese engineer in a white kimono and a black headband approaching a pedestal on which sits the mighty SM-11 (reverentially lit from below with a warm light). He carefully reaches both hands into the open chassis and to exultant strains of music in the background he lifts out a large lightly glistening emerald green amplifier board. Cradling the board in his arms, he scurries back to his work station, where the chassis of the MM7025 is waiting. Gently he places the board into the black chassis, which magically fits without modification. He bolts in a massive EI core transformer, makes a few more connections and turning away, he leans back, stretching out his arm and with a single finger, he gingerly presses the power button. With a growl like a hungry T-Rex driving a V8 Camaro and a flash of brilliant blue light, the MM7025 comes to life. The cacophony rapidly subsides and there, crouching on a workbench in the dim light is the MM7025 clad all in black, its blue porthole LED gently bathing the powerful shoulders of its composite faceplate. As the voice-over begins "Introducing the powerful new Marantz MM7025 stereo amplifier.” the MM7025 faceplate jumps into full frame, with a wildcat growl and a solid "thwack". The voice over continues, “Do we have your attention?” End scene.

Family Resemblance
All theatrics aside, the above isn't far from the truth, the MM7025 does have quite a bit of circuitry originally developed for the mighty SM-11, we like to think of the two amps as siblings with similar genetic makeup. The great news is the MM7025 offers performance very reminiscent of the SM-11 at a fraction of the price.

Circuit Design
The MM7025 uses current-feedback circuitry originally developed for Reference Series amps, which gives the MM7025 more power and cleaner sound into difficult loads than anything at this price should have. Marantz also selected specially designed LAPT Hyper-Power output transistors which deliver enormous power into virtually any load. Unlike the massive SM-11, the MM7025 is a fairly compact amp only 14" deep, so Marantz mounted the transistors in a a forced-air “thermal tunnel" which allows the MM7025 to keep its transistors at their optimum temperature regardless of load.

Appearance
Although performance is of utmost importance to us, we appreciate a good looking piece of hardware as much as anyone else and the MM7025 is gorgeous. We love the aluminum and glass-reinforced resin composite faceplate with center mounted backlit porthole from the Reference Series, elegant and muscular without appearing aggressive. Around back, Marantz chose 4-way binding posts, switchable RCA and XLR inputs and of course, a detachable IEC power cord.
