“When I think of Alex Schaaf, the immensely talented individual behind Yellow Ostrich, I’m reminded of the little engine that could. That might seem like a bit of a dig, but of all the bedroom projects in recent years none has seemed more organic and earnest than this one. He seems completely unswayed by the microtrends of the last few years, veering away from blog-house, chillwave, and crappy lo-fi punk. It’s almost definitively difficult to trace his influences (although I suspect there’s a major appreciation of Elliott Smith somewhere in his past), in large part because of his continual experimentation, not some grand experimentation that attempts to push the boundaries of capital-m 'Music' but his own personal boundaries. As a musician he’s growing and having fun doing so. He seems to create the music he wants to create, whether or not people are listening and whether or not he’ll sell out concert venues in the process.
