Q-Tip Kamaal The Abstract on 2LP
Recorded in 2001 and not released until 2009 due to a lack of label support, the long-delayed Kamaal the Abstract is an intensely idiosyncratic and revealing record. To that end, Q-Tip produced the entire album himself, even playing several instruments. What results is a daring melange of soul, cool-jazz, hip-hop and organic pop magic in the vein of Stevie Wonder and Prince. Tip is joined notably here by saxophonist Kenny Garrett, a one-time member of Miles Davis' ensemble, on the breathy "Abstractionisms," and flutist Gary Thomas (another Davis sideman) on "Do U Dig U." Kamaal the Abstract still boasts all the earmarks of Q-Tip's inimitable mic control as heard on the standout tracks "Even If It Is So" and "Blue Girl." Re-mixed and re-mastered for full sonic impact! Q-Tip on the album's delay, "I am really disappointed that Kamaal wasn't released. LA Reid didn't know what to do with it; then, three years later, they release OutKast. What OutKast is doing now, those are the kinds of sounds that are on Kamaal the Abstract. Maybe even a little more out." Q-Tip's Kamaal the Abstract Track Listing: LP1 1. Feelin' 2. Do You Dig U? 3. A Million Times 4. Blue Girl 5. Barely In Love 6. Heels 7. Abstractionisms LP2 1. Caring 2. Even If It Is So 3. Make It Work 4. Damn You're Cool |
