Fanfarlo Reservoir on Vinyl LP! Produced by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), Reservoir employs an array of instruments to create each lushly arranged track, including saws, clarinets, cellos, mandolins, ukuleles and melocias. First track "I'm a Pilot" looks at Howard Hughes' slow demise as inspirations. Whether its the choice of isolation or the inevitable end to it all, as in the track "The Walls Are Coming Down," Fanfarlo give us no choice but to succumb to the ebbs and flows, reflections and letting go that are conveyed in each metaphor that make this album so instrumentally and intellectually rich. Though a sense of melancholy permeates Reservoir, Simon's heartfelt voice and each band member's uncompromised musicianship invites us to soar above it all and simply let go. Hailing from the UK, Sweden and Belgium Fanfarlo began as the bedroom project of lead singer / songwriter Simon Balthazar. His literate pop songs bear more resemblance to the modern folk sounds of Sufjan Stevens, Beirut and The Arcade Fire than the fashion-driven London scene where the band resides. As his vision grew he fleshed out the lineup with an amazingly versatile group of musicians who play a vast number of instruments to bring these lushly-arranged pop tunes to life. Tapped and spiralling guitars, an insistently hammered piano chord, or an ominous stomp, the fervour with which they play is stirring and infectious. Fanfarlo Reservoir Track Listing |
