John Jenkins, a mystery figure in jazz history, was a superb altoist inspired by Charlie Parker, Jackie McLean and Phil Woods. He emerged from Chicago in 1957, made a strong impression during the next few years and then largely disappeared, only re-emerging a few times before his 1993 death. His greatest recording was the date that he co-led with Kenny Burrell. Joined by an all-star rhythm section featuring pianist Sonny Clark, Jenkins and Burrell created a very cool, melodic and accessible Blue Note album, a real treasure full of timeless music. The blend between the instruments, the emotional playing and the brilliance of the musicians make this a must-have.
