The Trio of Doom was originally assembled by Columbia Records to play a groundbreaking concert at the 1979 Havana Jazz Festival and it included former Miles Davis alumni, guitarist John McLaughlin and drummer Tony Williams as well as Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius. Barely rehearsed, the group blazed through the concert, then reassembled in the famed Columbia studios later in the week to get more acceptable takes of the same four tracks. 25 years later, the band’s only living member, John McLaughlin, revisited their collected works, producing this incredible album. A group built on state-of-the-art fusion power, the Trio of Doom remains a first-class souvenir of not only a historic concert but also a particular era, a time when jazz and rock had collided into a short-lived yet fruitful musical movement.
