Wayne Shorter has always had his own highly original style, both in terms of his improvisations and in his compositions. A very distinctive tenor-saxophonist from nearly the start of his career, Shorter never sounded like anyone else, being both unpredictable and ultimately logical in every phrase he created. While the merits of Shorter's later work with Weather Report and his own solo albums after 1970 have been debated for years, his earlier Blue Note albums have always been met with universal acclaim, especially Speak No Evil. Just thirty-one at the time of this 1964 classic, Shorter had just recorded Night Dreamer and Ju-Ju for Blue Note within the past year and was at one of his major peaks of creativity. The music on Speak No Evil, which includes such future Shorter standards as "Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum" and "Infant Eyes," is often beyond description for it combines the best elements of hard bop, post bop, free jazz and modal music plus Shorter's own individual approach. Not only does Shorter sound inspired by his own challenging pieces but so does Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock. This is not standard bebop or a predictable type of soul jazz but is actually a brand new style of music that has yet to be fully exploited.
