Roland Kirk really stretches out here with a modern yet never overindulgent soul sound that's uniquely his own. His reed lines remain fresh throughout and he also employs the lesser known manzello and stritch reed instruments to great effect. Jaki Byard (piano), Richard Davis (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums) flawlessly ride the energy of each new twist and turn in Kirk's repertoire and the results are sublime and full of invention.
