Darwin Deez was born in North Carolina to Maher Baba disciples. He attended, hated and dropped out of Wesleyan and moved to NYC where he fell in with the anti-folk Sidewalk Cafe crowd and waited tables at Angelica Kitchen. He wrote and recorded this self-titled debut album, Darwin Deez, in his apartment over a period of two and a half years using an old tower PC, some effects plug-ins, a practice amp, and an inexpensive microphone.

His songs are mostly stripped down and kept simple and unadorned but they pulse and throb deliciously with life and a rare wit. Certainly it is difficult to imagine anyone else with such a fondness for twisted wordplay and lyricism, whilst also maintaining an emotive undertow of sadness and longing in his oeuvre. This album is by turns joyous and heart tugging and it has already been well received overseas, especially in the U.K. where he has become a bona-fide indie-popstar.
