Monade's third album Monstre Cosmics is their most assured and distinct yet. What initially began as a Laetitia Sadier side project from her main outfit, Stereolab, has blossomed into a full-fledged unit that stands on its own post-rock legs. With its combination of French lounge, Krautrock, film music, retro-futuristic synths and lilting singing, Monade's sound bears no small resemblance to Stereolab's, but that's not a bad thing, and neither is the group's third full-length Monstre Cosmic. Whether on the gear-shifting psych-lounge excursion of "Regarde" or the burbling atmospheric rock of "Elle Topo" (complete with Ennio Morricone-influenced intro), Monade shows that it's not afraid to stick to the territory it knows best. But that territory is plenty adventurous as is, and Monstre Cosmic is brimming with skill, authority and a command of sonic beauty.
