Junior Boys It's All True on 2LP

The insistent tempo and playfully anxious production of the aptly name album opener “Itchy Fingers” opens Junior Boys’ fourth album with a crisp refreshing bounce. And then almost as suddenly comes the moody tranquility of “Playtime” which showcases just how great an emotive singer Jeremy Greenspan has become. Two songs in and you come to realize Junior Boys have become a formidable production and arrangement team.

Greenspan began writing and conceiving It’s All True in China while visiting his sister. In fact, the cover of the album is a detail of the U.K. Pavilion from last year’s World Expo that took place in Shanghai. While there, he collaborated with and recorded with local musicians for inspiration and to study as source material, with some of those arrangements making their subtle presence throughout the record.

Upon returning to his native Canada (and finishing off a few album mixes for Caribou’s widely regarded Swim album), Greenspan set to work turning his works-in-progress into fully realized recordings with Berlin-based Junior-in-crime, Matt Didemus, first via the wonders of modern pen-pal styled music making and then with Didemus returning to Junior Boys’ studio/bar complex in Hamilton, Ontario to complete the album.

From the slinky stomp of “You’ll Improve Me” and the mellow funk-pop parable of “Second Chance” to the album’s epic closing track and first single “Banana Ripple,” It’s All True is full of inventive production and sonic delights.
