Sugar’s secret ingredient was Bob Mould’s popcore, his own personal brand of power pop, heavy on the angst and doom and gloom, with the back beat to drive the point in, and the melody to help make it all stick to your heart. Following nearly a decade as guitarist with the legendary hardcore band Hüsker Dü, Mould formed Sugar with drummer Malcolm Travis and bassist David Barbe and recorded what is arguably his best recording since the mid-'80s, combining the dense, melodic noise of his previous recordings with a sharp, bright, hypnotic musicality.

Copper Blue turned heads in the press and radio world, and became one of the most influential albums of the early ‘90s. The critics lauded the album as a breath of fresh air, and to this day their Top-Ten lists are packed with bands who would never have gotten there unless there was Mould and his Sugar.
