A great little set of grooves by organist Lonnie Smith and one of his best albums ever! The key to Drives is that it finds Lonnie backed by a totally sympathetic group of musicians including Ronnie Cuber on baritone, Dave Hubbard on tenor and the great Joe Dukes on drums. There's a measured funkiness in spots on Drives that's outstanding along with sparer moments that are as equally impressive. Includes the original "Psychedlic Pi," and great covers of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" "Seven Steps to Heaven," the funky "Twenty Five Miles," plus "Spinning Wheel." An excellent set with great soloing!
