This 1966 landmark album launched the blues-rock revolution of the mid-'60s. The Bluesbreakers were formed in January 1963 and became an ever-evolving lineup of more than 100 different combinations of musicians performing under that name. Eric Clapton joined in 1965 just a few months after the release of their first album. Clapton brought the blues influences to the forefront of the group.

The best of the Brit Blues records, lifted above the pack by blistering Clapton solos (he plays short, snappy licks, not the lengthy sonic explorations he often got into later). Mayall's blues vocals a lot more compelling than most of the Brits. The rhythm section stays in its place and the horns and keyboards add a variety and coherence. The covers are good (including two instrumentals), and the originals are great; they're riff tunes built on blues chord changes, and Clapton's guitar playing stands out as a precursor to his Layla riffs.
