The Drive-By Truckers Gangstabilly Remastered and Reissued on 180-gram Vinyl LP We Have the Last Remaining Copies of These Out-of-Print LPs! Gatefold 2-LP Set Features Illuminating Artwork! These Alabama rockers achieved critical acclaim for 2001’s double-album Southern Rock Opera, a two-act opus juxtaposing a historical fiction documenting Lynyrd Skynyrd's arc and the life of the Truckers’ prolific songwriter and enigmatic vocalist Patterson Hood. Long out of print even before Southern Rock Opera was released, the band's simpler and more impulsive 1998 debut Gangstabilly unfolds as a 48-hour live-in-the-studio jam session of boiled-over twang, double-barrel rock and roll, and deprecating wit. While nothing is off-limits in Hood's Deep South reconnaissance--Faberge cologne, domestic violence, Led Zeppelin, Republicans in hell, Porter Wagoner, baloney sandwiches, '68 Bonnevilles--the Truckers tread on the myths with reverence rather than mockery. A tribute to late actor, "Steve McQueen" is faster than the car-chase scene in Bullitt. The crude reality of "Buttholeville" is as much white heat as it is white trash. And Hood’s "The Living Bubba," about an Atlanta musician dying of AIDS who "can’t die now cuz I got another show," turns from an earnest tribute to a "no preachin', no self-servin'" message from a band with a conscience--and, as it turned out, one helluva a future. "All [of the reissued Drive-By Truckers LPs] boast slight-to-considerable improvements in overall dynamics, midrange punch, and soundstage width. In comparison to the good-sounding CDs, they possess a greater sense of air, extension, energy, and presence. What's best is that the music sounds even livelier (no surprise given the group records on two-inch analog tape when possible), the band's live-in-the-studio results conveyed warmly and palpably via the thick, extended vinyl grooves. Save for A Blessing and a Curse, every beautifully packaged LP is a two-vinyl gatefold affair complete with lyrics and illustrations." -Bob Gendron.
