Dom Family Of Love EP on 10" Vinyl
Ever since he went from selling low budget beats out of a Worcester bedroom to pursuing his own twisted version of pop music, Dom has made one thing clear: his undying desire to deliver heaven-sent harmonies and hooks that are heavier than, and about as colorful as, his pink paisley guitar. That was certainly the case on last year’s Sun Bronzed Greek Gods EP, as proven by crowd pleasers like the synth-laced “Living In America,” the candied chords of “Bochicha” and “Jesus,” and the bleached balladry of “Burn Bridges.” Nothing’s changed now that he’s finally ready to release EP2, Family of Love. If anything, Dom’s ideas have only gotten more “rando,” as his road-weathered band (drummer Bobby, guitarist Cosmo, and bassist/guitarist Erik) used a proper studio session with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Björk) as an excuse to experiment with everything from a “dial tone solo” to a fun machine that helped them pretend “we were Brian Wilson or some shit.” Don’t worry, though. Dom didn’t turn the sound booth into a sandbox or lose his mind along the way. If anything, his pop instincts are sharper than ever before, balancing a sleek, minimal approach with an ever-evolving blend of elements that’d fall apart in lesser hands. That includes such disparate influences as the beehive-shaking breaks of Daft Punk, the cloud-scraping melodies of Mariah Carey, and the trouble-starting rock ’n’ roll of the Replacements. Beyond that, the EP’s title is a toast to the family Dom never had; the people who inspire him to make a song as deceptively simple, and profoundly uplifting, as “Happy Birthday.” One track (“Some Boys”) even revolves around the playful vocals of a close friend named Emma. Or as Dom puts it, “I thought her lyrics were really great, so I wanted to make a song out of it and share it with the world.” “I want to pump out as many records as possible,” he says, “and actually make a difference in pop music. No matter how a.d.d. it all sounds, the more I write, the more I really wanna do this thing.” Dom Family Of Love EP Track Listing: 1. Telephone 2. Family of Love 3. Damn 4. Happy Birthday 5.
