Extending the late-night themes he explored on his stunning debut, Tom Waits continues to explore the seedy underside of urban life and desperate human emotions on his equally stellar sophomore effort. However, The Heart of Saturday Night also included a few changes, the biggest of which is Waits' move away from love ballads. Here, he aims straight for the gutter, the bright neon lights, and the cigarette-strewn alleys, love be damned. Waits hits the mark every time.

Focusing on the after-hours aspects of night life and desire, Waits frames his increasingly nicotine-scarred voice with jazzy arrangements that aptly capture the moods and feelings of his lively cast of characters. Along with minimalist orchestral accompaniment, bluesier influences also seep into the piano-driven songs, and Waits occasionally trades singing for rhythmic Beat spoken-word poetry that mirrors the singer's progressive use of metaphor and allusion. On The Heart of Saturday Night, Waits gives new meaning to what it is to serenade an audience. This is the avenue at which Hunter S. Thompson, Allen Ginsberg, and Bob Dylan meet and have a smoke.
