A still-novel idea and an even better album, Tom Waits' Nighthawks At The Diner literally brings the atmosphere of a nightclub into the studio as, for the sessions, Waits concocted a club in the studio and invited a live audience to the recording sessions. Intimate, spontaneous, and filled with late-night vibes, the 1975 double LP is an American classic. 

Already championed on the strength of his first two albums, Waits' increased maturity is in evidence throughout, as his now-trademark humor comes into fore on songs such as "Emotional Weather Report" and "Better Off Without a Wife." He's almost an advertisement for the allure of whiskey and pills to cure loneliness, but remains willing to bear the lonesomeness cross for others around him.

And, thanks to the studio set-up, Waits' framing of songs with elaborate scenery and graphic detail have never been stronger. A crack band that includes drummer Bill Goodwin, bassist Jim Hughart, tenor saxophonist Peter Christlieb, and pianist Mike Melvoin supplies the sonic landscape. Waits' rich, theatrical voice and guttersnipe poetry do the rest. As do his colorful introductions to the fare.

An artist whose popularity spans generations and is equally prized by both older and younger audiences, Waits' records remain in constant demand, particularly on vinyl, where they fetch top dollar on the used market. Despite several import LP versions, no edition of Nighthawks at the Diner has ever claimed enhanced sound.
