“It is my desire with the Legacies project to revive interest in the music—especially the short pieces—of various countries or cultures which, I think, should not be forgotten. The repertoire is rich with such works, beautifully disposed for the instrument and demanding imaginative interpretation. Yet in a generation tending to exclude these beauties from recitals in favor of sonatas, much of this literature has been shunted aside. Thus, I approach this project much as the preservationist does a species of wildlife threatened with extinction. And my starting point is close to the heart and my heritage.

When I was a youngster attending recitals with my parents in Chicago, the great violinists were all Jewish—Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, Bronislav Huberman, Leonid Kogan, Fritz Kreisler, Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrakh, Henryk Szeryng, Efrem Zimablist...They put their programs together like splendid meals to whet the appetite, to satisfy it and, at the end, to reward it with desserts. Who would disagree that this Golden Age of violin playing offered a kind of musical cuisine too often missing from today’s concert platforms? Audiences thronged to hear not only the masterpieces of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms in the first half, but the shorter pieces of special character which filled the second half so tellingly.

Often these works were of Jewish origin. With a savor all their own, the intensely expressive phrases of such pieces reached across the boundaries of race, culture and religion to touch everyone. Heard today, their nostalgic power communicates feeling and emotion of a most poignant sort. To place these works once again before the listening public is more than an honor for me; it is a responsibility I feel to the core of my being.” - Aaron Rosand
