Originally released in 1985, Tom Waits' ninth album Rain Dogs is a loose concept album about the people who live on the streets of New York City, the so-called urban dispossessed. Generally considered the middle album of a trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is praised for its broad spectrum of musical styles and genres that ranges from grim nightlife memoirs ("9th and Hennepin," "Singapore") to portraits of small-time hustlers ("Gun Street Girl," "Union Square") to bursts of street-corner philosophy ("Blind Love," "Time"). The sprawling 19-song set also features notable contributions from Marc Ribot and Keith Richards.
