Although he was a severely underrated player during his lifetime, in recent years Grant Green has emerged as one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar. His playing, especially on his vanguard Verve album, His Majesty, King Funk, is immediately recognizable, perhaps more than that of any other postwar jazz guitarist.

The possessor of a cool, translucent technique, Grant Green eschewed traditional chordal playing in favor of a style that relied more on linear, single-note phrasing. And though few guitarists could handle standards and ballads with the brilliance of Green, he was simply jaw-dropping when it came to funk, as his '67 Verve set, His Majesty King Funk, amply displays.
