Area 52 finds Mexican musical duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela reinterpreting nine of their own original compositions with dramatic new arrangements that showcase a thirteen-piece Cuban orchestra, composed of some of Havana's finest young players. The album was produced by Peter Asher and arranged by Rodrigo y Gabriela working closely with Switzerland based pianist Alex Wilson. Recording took place during the summer of 2011 at Abdala Studios in Havana and later at Lumbini Studios in Ixtapa, Mexico. Additional guests on the album include Anoushka Shankar on sitar, rock drummer John Tempesta (The Cult, White Zombie, Testament), jazz bass player Carles Benavent (Miles Davis, Paco De Lucia, Chick Corea), Palestinian group Le Trio Joubran and Samuel Formell Alfonso from Los Van Van. This is Rodrigo y Gabriela as they have never been heard before.
