The most unique record in Muddy Waters' catalog, Electric Mud is the blues legend's only psychedelic album and influenced the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Public Enemy's Chuck D.

The idea of Chess Records owner/producer Marshall Chess, the 1968 set teamed Waters with members of the psychedelic band Rotary Connection. A fusion of blues and the era's experimental rock sounds, Electric Mud takes its name from the former term's connotation of being "out there" and incorporates unconventional instrumentation such as concert harp, saxophone, and wah-wah pedals.

Waters' guitar also has a distinctive fuzztone not present on any of his other efforts. While controversial upon release, Electric Mud stands as Waters' most commercially successful effort and is today seen as a groundbreaking statement.
