Golden Smog Down By The Old Mainstream On 2 x 180g Vinyl LP

Golden Smog’s first full length, Down By The Old Mainstream, was recorded in 1994 in only five days. It was made up mostly of original songs written specifically for the project. The songs on the album revealed a fun, spirited sensibility allowing the band members to let loose from their day jobs.

Golden Smog first appeared in 1992 with the release of their EP, On Golden Smog. A side project for members of whose true identities of the band members were veiled by the use of pseudonyms David Spear, Michael Macklyn, Ryamond Virginia, Scott Summitt, Jarret Decatur-Lane and Leonardson Saratoga. Each name was a deliberate clue that included an actual middle name and part of the address of each band member. Band members include Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Gary Louris and Marc Perlman of the Jayhawks, Dan Murphy of Soul Asylum, Kraig Johnson of Run Westy Run and Noah Levy of the Honeydogs.

The group took their name from the name of a Flintstones character that was itself a parody of the Velvet Fog, a nickname for the singer, Mel Torme. The group was formed in 1989 in Minneapolis a country-rock group that became a fixture in the cities music scene. They were a reaction to the area’s current punk, hardcore scene.
