Don't let the title dissuade you, this is a album for everyone! Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34 ('Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell') was composed in 1946. The work was originally conceived as a score for a documentary film, Instruments of the Orchestra, made by the Crown Film Unit and first shown at the Empire Theatre, Leicester Square, London, on 29 November 1946. The first concert performance of the work was given by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Malcolm Sargent on 15 October 1946, at Liverpool, and the Young Person's Guide has since established itself as one of the most popular and immediately appealing of all Britten's instrumental compositions.
