KINKS - MUSWELL HILLBILLIES (HYBRID SACD)

For many Kinks fans, Muswell Hillbillies is their all-time favorite yet the album that sounds like no other in their canon: a quiet country-blues feel that echoes the post-war depression of England with only the slightest bit of cheer. It was Stereo Review's Album of the Year in 1972 and really is a cohesive work that yielded no hit singles of either the crunchy or pretty variety.

Muswell Hillbillies holds a special place in the hearts of the band themselves. Released in November 1971, its anachronistic, laid-back rootsy quality flew in the face of the blues-rock acts then diddling themselves all over FM radio. While the theme of Muswell Hillbillies was about getting back to the roots, it was Ray and Dave Davies' own roots, in London's Muswell Hill neighborhood, that inspired Ray to pen the album.
