On 1973's A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, Harry Nilsson, along with the help of a 39-piece orchestra, performs a collection of well-chosen standards from throughout the first half of the 20th century. This album is notable in being a standards album produced decades before standards albums started to become popular, and he did it better than most. The album features brilliant performances by both Nilsson and arranger Gordon Jenkins (Frank Sinatara, Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong).

Nilsson proved to be a marvelous interpreter of songs like "What'll I Do?" and "Making Whoopee," his version of "As Time Goes By" became a minor hit.
