With all modesty, we haven't heard an SACD of jazz from the '50's that sounded so good since MFSL's recent edition of Coltrane's Soultrane! There's great definition and presence, fairly amazing from a mono source, but also the warmth of Miles' tone that especially shines of the ballads. This was the last album to be issued from Miles' famous Rudy Van Gelder sessions in May and October of 1956. With trumpeter Miles are pianist Red Garland, drummer Philly Joe Jones, and bassist Paul Chambers. If your Miles collection starts with Kind Of Blue, this is the zenith of his style recorded right before that groundbreaking classic. As a bonus there are new illustrated liner notes from DownBeat editor Jason Koransky.
