The brainchild of Los Angeles native singer/songwriter John Ondrasik, Five For Fighting (the name came from the amount of time a hockey player spends in the penalty box for fighting) follows a similar musical path as the Counting Crows and sounds like a more modern Elton John. Ondrasik is a very talented songwriter combining melody, timing and rhythm to accentuate the smart, poignant and moving lyrics of his music. 'Superman' is no doubt the standout track on this album having received lots of radio airplay and it's a smart, well constructed piece of contemporary pop music centered around piano, acoustic guitar and his fragile growl. The lyrics are dark with sometimes a glimmer of hope shining through. Group name aside, this is a great singer-songwriter album and fans of well constructed and performed singer/songwriter style music would be well served to purchase this disc.
