Playing the Angel returns to dark, brooding greatness that is Depeche Mode. Its an emotionally loaded, characteristically long faced, distortion-pocked masterwork - a 'Personal Jesus' level accomplishment. Muffled beats and blasts of suck-you-in static recall the industrial glory days; and the simple, synthy exercise in hyper-intelligent pop. Finally some very well written songs from David Gahan appear for the first time. One of the best Depeche Mode records in years. All hail the 80s.
