The top-of-the-line Focal Profile 928 is only slightly larger than the 918, but this full 3-way design has the added power and dynamic slam of two W-Cone 6 1/2” woofers. The four drivers in the Profile 928 have been meticulously matched to produce a seamless sound, with the speakers almost “disappearing” within the soundfield. With a fl at frequency response of 38 Hz – 31.5 kHz, a sensitivity of 91dB, and an 8 Ohm impedance, the Profile 928 has extreme dynamic capabilities while being easy to drive. Its sleek, elegant lines hide the fact this speaker sounds twice its size. Due to the absence of coloration from the cabinet, the midrange and treble are much better defined and more transparent. The beautiful grills on the Profile line are an integral part of the loudspeakers’ design that actually optimizes the tweeters response. The Tweeter:
As in the Utopia Be Series, the Profile tweeter uses a Poron suspension that helps deliver increased speed, frequency extension and inner detail found in today’s best pressings and CD’s. The use of Poron prevents the suspension from negatively acting upon the tweeter diaphragm which reduces the levels of distortion by a factor of ten. This immediately translates to an extremely smooth and detailed high frequency presentation, especially at 2 kHz, where the ear is extremely sensitive.
The W-Cones Drivers:
The W-Sandwich Composite Cone, patented by Focal over 15 years ago, has gone through tremendous innovations and refinements. The major advance comes from the use of special structural aerospace foam and tunable layers of finely woven glass tissue. The molecular bond between the foam and the glass tissue results in a cone structure that is low in mass, mechanically dampened, with superior rigidity. The W-Cone produces an extremely transparent and neutral sound; free from coloration and distortions normally associated with loudspeakers.
The Cabinet:
The elegant cabinets offered in the Profile Series are made up of six curved 3mm layers bound by a proprietary resin, further reinforced by robust internal ribbing and a sophisticated back brace; this sandwich structure is highly rigid and prevents the spread of vibrations for extremely flat low-frequency response. The curved panel and 4MM thick front baffle greatly reduces resonance and coloration. No internal cavity surfaces are parallel so that standing waves are dispersed naturally through the loudspeaker for improved linearity and powerful bass response.
