The Band's 1969 eponymous release is in many ways more deliberate and even more accomplished than their debut, partially due to the fact that guitarist Robbie Robertson had taken over the songwriting, writing or co-writing all 12 songs. The album effectively mixes the kind of mournful songs like "Whispering Pines" and "When You Awake," that had dominated Music from Big Pink, with rollicking uptempo numbers like "Rag Mama Rag" and "Up on Cripple Creek." Again, the groups' overall sound stands out the most, with their timeless arrangements and expressive singing from Manuel, Helm and Danko. Music from Big Pink is a classic in its own right, but The Band stands as their masterpiece.
