Shelby Lynne Suit Yourself On CD

Shelby Lynne's 2003 album, Identity Crisis, was aptly named, as it saw Lynne move away from a big, lush, commercial radio-geared style to an earthier, stripped-down persona. Suit Yourself takes this same approach and runs with it, often sounding like an impromptu late-night New York City singer/songwriter jam session. Lynne's jazzy, loose vocal phrasing is in full effect, and her timbre is a bit huskier here. The album satisfies with the honesty and strength of the material, which ranges from Lynne's killer cover of guest Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia" (here titled simply "Track 12") to the smoky groove of "I Cry Everyday," the wistful ballad "Old Time's Sake," the Waylon Jennings-like "Iced Tea" and the memorable track "Johnny Met June," which she wrote the day Johnny Cash died. Suit Yourself is the work of an artist truly coming into her own.
