By 1961, Robert Johnson had become something of a mythical figure who people had heard of but had not necessarily heard. His recordings, the most important blues recordings of all time, had become virtually lost to the ages. Only one complete song was commercially available until this album, King Of The Delta Blues Singers, was compiled and released, sparking a whole new generation’s interest in authentic delta blues. This is the album that people like Keith Richards and Eric Clapton remember listening to and attempting to emulate as teenagers. Although their heroes were more immediate blues figures like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, this music struck much more of an emotional chord. It became clear that these were the songs upon which Chicago blues and rock and roll were built. In the late '60s, Johnson’s music was re-introduced into the rock vernacular with groups like Cream doing “Crossroads” or Led Zeppelin doing “Traveling Riverside Blues.” The myth that surrounds Robert Johnson has only grown since people have discovered his music. The legend of selling his soul to the devil at the crossroads in exchange for his musical ability is virtually synonymous with the blues.
