Dance Mania is the album that taught Americans how to mambo, cha cha cha, bolero and more. It sowed the seeds of modern salsa. Recorded a decade into Puente’s 50-year recording career, Dance Mania was his first major foray into dance music, released just as stereo recording technology gave the music a vibrancy that helped it shine. It ranks as one of the “25 albums representing turning points and pinnacles in 20th-century popular music,” according to The New York Times. As the Times reported in 2000, Dance Mania “represents the height of the mambo craze, America’s first lasting infatuation with Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Its fusion of sophisticated jazz arrangements with Afro-Cuban percussion remains hot and elegant, and it was a bellwether, plotting the salsa revolution of the following decades.”
Beyond his standing as the King of Latin Music, Tito Puente was one of the most memorable entertainers of the 20th century in any genre. As a composer, musician and band leader, the NYC native of Puerto Rican heritage was embraced by Americans of all colors for his exciting fusion of Afro-Cuban and Caribbean sounds tailor-made for the dance floor. Tito Puente remains a cultural icon whose appeal transcends demographics. His career spanned more than 50 years and 100 albums, his composition “Oye Como Va” was made famous by Santana, and his memorable appearances on The Cosby Show, The Mambo Kings and The Simpsons all contributed to his legend. The image of the flamboyant superstar dubbed “el Rey” playing his signature timbales is familiar to every generation of Americans. He remains the most famous name in all of Latin music.
