The Marantz PM-15S2 is Elegant, Refined and Extremely musical!
Built on the architecture of Marantz's latest amplifier designs, debuted in the SM-11, the PM-15S2 is more powerful than its predecessor and also more accomplished. Smoother and more resolved, the PM-15S2 has a smoother, sweeter top end, better grip on the bottom end and more definition and presence in the all important midrange. The new architecture also provides better current delivery for better grip on difficult to drive speakers.
Sonically, the PM-15S2 has great warmth and life, with excellent resolution and soundstaging. The bottom end is firm and powerful, but taut and well-defined. The top octaves offer excellent air with a great sense of space and definition of the hall. Most reviews of amplifiers talk about how good an amplifier sounds at high volumes and the PM-15S2 acquits itself nicely in that regard, but at more realistic normal to low volumes, the PM-15S2 is unparalleled in its intimacy, its ability to draw the listener into any performance or recording. The PM-15S2 was designed by music lovers for music lovers and this is most definitely a music listener's amplifier.
The PM-15S2 comes fully loaded with audiophile features like a built-in MM/MC Phono Stage, Pre-amp Output and separate Power Amp Input, large shielded Toroidal transformer and WBT Binding Posts. Overall operation is simple and intuitive and the PM-15S2 continues Marantz’s tradition of excellent remotes. Front panel controls are simple and elegant, two large knobs on the front, the one on the right for volume, the one on the left for source selection. The power button is large and placed dead-center for easy access. The PM-15S2 even includes Bass and Treble controls; Marantz knows that these are anathema to audiophiles, but Marantz also knows that everyone has a couple of those albums that could use a little help to sound their best. Simply return them to their full upright positions to keep them out of the signal path. For those prone to late night listening, the PM-15S2 includes a very decent headphone amplifier built into the front panel, as is a switch to turn off the main speakers.
One other cool new feature on the PM-15S2 is the FCBS system. The Floating Control Bus System has been available on top level Marantz Reference models for a number of years, but is just now appearing on the 15 series. The FCBS is a very cool control mechanism which allows the PM-15S2 to be integrated with multiple amplifiers to do Bi-Amping or even connect multiple PM-15S2s for multichannel operation!
