In March 1980, conductor Carlos Kleiber (1930–2004) recorded this version of Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO), a performance now considered an all-time classic.

Known for thrilling audiences with his gorgeous conducting and confounding them with rare appearances and frequent cancellations, Kleiber was in top form here. One of only nine studio recordings Kleiber made in his lifetime, his Symphony No. 4 was revolutionary in the sense that it swept away the stagnation and ennui that had plagued the piece up until then. It was Kleiber’s last studio performance with the VPO and his first digital recording, something which gave the session a great sense of clarity and definition.
