Diverging from pure complementary circuit design, the go-to approach in hi-fi amplifiers for the past four-plus decades, Yamaha's Floating and Balanced method uses output elements of the same polarity on the plus and minus sides of the output stage – and wholly separates the negative-feedback circuit and power supply into a total of four plus and minus sides of the left and right channels. The result: A thoroughly symmetric push-pull operation of the output stage. Completely floating the the entire power-amplifier circuit from the electrical ground also eliminates any negative impact of minute voltage fluctuations and ground noise. In addition, the technique simplifies the signal path in that the number of parts required for the circuitry for each channel gets reduced, leading to reproduction marked by added freshness and liveliness. MOSFET output elements in parallel also mean enhanced low-impedance drive capability.

M-5000 also benefits from a cutting-edge approach to its build. The amplifier's rigid streamlined construction means the entire chassis has a dual inner/outer structure and an original structure housing three blocks – two power amplifier units and the power supply unit, each supported by independent base frame. Such architecture achieves omnidirectional blocking of unwanted vibration as well as wiring with shortest-distance transmission from the power transformer to the power amplifier, and from the latter to the speaker output terminal of both the power supply and the audio signal. Custom-made block capacitors and enhanced contact points between the aluminum foil affecting the internal impedance and the wiring tabs – as well as screw connections using brass screws and brass lug for the main wiring in the large current path – further attest to M-5000's spare-no-expenses schematics and reference-grade quality.

Indeed, to attain sublime bass reproduction and thrillingly open sound even at extremely high volume levels, M-5000 applies the concept of Mechanical Grounding to the heavy internal parts subject to vibration – while still retaining perfect left/right weight balance. The solution, patent-pending brass feet with a screw-in structure distinguished with separate upper and lower sections, provides both pinpoint support and protection. It further fosters expressive, expansive musical reproduction distinguished with a rich, powerful low end. And Yamaha ensured every screw was given the same tightening torque, a process not unlike that involved with crafting a prized instrument – a title M-5000 certainly deserves. For additional proof, just consider the massive 1200VA toroidal transformer with minimal flux leakage and excellent conversion efficiency for brute strength. Direct drawing of the internal winding and direct connection of the circuit with a brass lug terminal yield a power supply absent signal loss. A hand-selected brass base plate between the bottom of the transformer and the inner chassis completes the array.

Speaking of hand-picked beauty, what to make of the illuminated, warm, high-precision level meters (switchable between VU and park display) and piano-finish wood side panels other than to affirm that they belong as the centerpiece in a room? The same can be said for the 0.35-inch-thick aluminum front panel and 0.24-inch-thick aluminum top panel, which also features a heat sink with a five-line musical staff motif. Protection for those meters comes in the form of a rectangular, .031-inch-thick, crystal glass window sporting a tapered cut at the upper and lower ends.
