Description

The First Preamplifier to Employ Floating and Balanced Technology: Flagship Yamaha C-5000 Plays with Profound Musicality and Purity, Features Book-Matched Construction

Devised to make you forget it's even in your system when you play music – a tough feat given its remarkable looks – the Yamaha C-5000 preamplifier combines the subtle art of delicate nuance with the heart-skipping excitement of overwhelming power to achieve profound musicality. The result of three years of development and the work of six core Yamaha engineers, and the first preamplifier to employ the company's patented Floating and Balanced technology, it arrives with advanced circuitry that yields incredibly smooth, stable transmission and structural implements that stop noise and vibration in their tracks. In all regards, and with everything from vinyl to high-res digital sources, C-5000 epitomizes flagship design, aural purity, and gorgeous aesthetics.

Completely balanced in all stages, circuitry, and signal paths, C-5000 employs Floating and Balanced Power Amplifier technology in which all amplifier circuitry – including the power supply – floats from the electrical ground. Since it requires two pairs of amp circuits and power-supply circuits for each channel, C-5000 harbors a unique architecture that creates a virtual floating and balanced power source all the while eliminating any complication of the circuit configuration. Relatedly, C-5000 touts completely balanced transmission of the phono output – including the MC head amp, which preserves the balanced single from start to finish. Less susceptible to external noise and more ideal for the minute details demanded by high-quality analog, the arrangement results in head-turning expressiveness, dynamics, and clarity.

Yamaha's decision to opt for book-matched construction proves equally crucial to C-5000's stop-you-in-your-tracks performance. All audio circuitry, including the input/output terminals, ground lines, and local power supply regulator, are put on a single board per channel. Furthermore, the structure constitutes a breakthrough in that the two left/right sections come mounted back to back. Here, the two boards exist in perfect symmetry as if reflected in a mirror – from the part arrangement to the circuit pattern, and the pattern surfaces of the two boards are stacked so that they face each other. Consequently, signal flow remains aligned in one direction, and the distance of ground between the left and right sections measures as close to zero as possible. By extension, jumper wires and connectors are no longer necessary, and all signal transmission, power supply, and ground connections become minimized.

Indeed, if you look at C-5000 from above with its cover removed, you'll notice two main power transformers on the left and right end of the front side, as well as a main regulator board adorned with six block capacitors. The main regulator board has two layers – upper for the left channel and lower for the right – and is engineered so that the power feed to the local regulators on the main board remains at the back to ensure the shortest distance and equal left/right lengths. Tightly fit with custom bass screws and lugs, 12AWG power-supply wires join a thick aluminum block that runs along the right-left width of the board and provides support parallel to the rear panel terminals. Locating the stabilizer between the upper and lower substrates translate to exceptional sonic focus by way of aligning the vibration modes of each substrate. In addition, patent-pending feet allow you to install spikes and add to the unit's overall stability.

And that's not all. Bolstered by low-magnetic leakage and excellent regulation, toroidal power transformers come enclosed in independently mounted copper-plated cases on the left and right. Rated at a capacity of 25VA (×2), the power supply wiring gets directly drawn from the winding with a brass lug, further contributing to low impedance. The arrangement is topped off with a hefty brass base plate on the bottom. Moving to the front, a solid, 0.35-inch-thick aluminum front panel, 0.24-inch-thick aluminum top panel, and piano-finish wooden side panels comprise a classy chassis taken to an even higher level of luxury via a cut-aluminum volume knob. Its integrated pointer smoothly rotates along the indented obliquely tapered front panel, demonstrating the accuracy and support of the controls. Even the lever switches stem from repeated trial-and-error tests.

Functionally, a subsonic filter, trigger terminals, balanced input terminals with attenuators and phase inverters, tone controls, a headphone jack, and a wireless remote further push C-5000 to ravishing heights. Ditto the super-low THD figures and stellar signal-to-noise ratio measurements. Crafted for touch, feel, and audibility, C-5000 stands as a supreme work of art you'll not only want to display, but use nonstop.

"Loved it. Loved using it. Loved looking at it. I just never questioned its contribution, which is unusual for me."
– Allan Moulton, The Absolute Sound, Golden Ear Award

"Both the C-5000 preamp and M-5000 power amplifier show Japanese engineering ingenuity and construction quality at its very best. Yes, the feature list looks impressive in a brochure, but the technology used has a direct bearing on the ultimate sound quality of both amps here. The result is typically sublime, with Yamaha's longstanding 'Natural Sound' moniker rarely feeling more appropriate."
– Adam Smith, Hi-Fi+, Highly Commended review

"For the brave out there, the Yamaha C-5000 could be one of the most rewarding purchases you make, especially if a turntable is in your rotation."
