Fits-Anywhere Size, Five-Star Performance, Immense Versatility, Expressive Sound: Compact Dali Oberon 1 Bookshelf Loudspeakers Feature Larger-Than-Normal Tweeter and 5.25-Inch Woofer

At first glance, you might not expect too much from the Dali Oberon 1 bookshelf loudspeakers. After all, they're super-compact by design, quite cheap by high-end standards, and reveal a similarly arrayed tweeter/driver combination seen on many other models in its class. But as soon as the music starts, you'll likely realize Oberon 1 is cut from a different cloth. Featuring a cabinet that ensures an optimal balance between inner volume tailored for taut bass and freedom of positioning for easy room integration, these Danish-engineered workhorse delivers an output that might have you asking "that kind of sound comes out of that size speaker?"

Dali gets overachieving performance from Oberon 1 with a larger-than-conventional 1.15-inch soft-dome tweeter and SMC-based 5.25-inch wood-fiber woofer. The former is custom-made especially for the Oberon Series and generates high pressure with less excursion, keeping voice-coil motion to a minimum. It also weighs less than those from the competition, while its front plate boasts similar geometry to the company's more advanced units. With the tweeter providing extended frequency response and low coloration, its complementary woofer plays with high accuracy, control, and detail. A single-wire crossover and solid, resonance-defeating cabinet – lined with acoustic damping material located along the sides, top, and bottom – combine with rear-panel bass ports and an advanced motor system to complete a model that aces versatility, sonics, and decor tests.

Able to fit in tight spaces or even be mounted on the walls, Oberon 1 proves dynamic, expressive, insightful, cohesive, and even expansive. Factor in the ways they accommodate to your setup and dimensions, and these simultaneously bold and refined bookshelf beauties – backed by our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee – leave just one real decision on the table: Which of the four colors you prefer.

"If you're looking for a small, unfussy pair of speakers we can't think of anything more capable at this kind of price than these Dalis. They really are a joy."
What Hi-Fi?, five-star review

Low-Loss Woofer Optimized with Wood-Fiber Cone
The 5.25-inch low-loss woofer used in Oberon 1 is optimized with a wood-fiber structured cone. Built to reproduce the delicate midrange and bass frequency area, it is constructed from a blend of fine grain paper pulp and reinforced with wood fibers, a combination that creates a stiff, lightweight, and well-behaving structure. In concert with a low-loss surround and spider suspension, the cone reproduces micro-details in the signal with high accuracy. The membrane terminates in a rubber surround chosen for its soft, flexible properties. This gives the membrane free movement with a very low dampening effect, and leaves the magnet motor to control the membrane movement.

Patented Woofer Technology: Soft Magnetic Compound (SMC)
With the use of SMC in Oberon 1's woofer, mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents gets greatly reduced. The improvement in the magnet motor system results in a lowering of the third-order distortion. This allows Oberon 1 to present longer listening pleasure with a relaxed midrange and a surprising amount of detailing for the class. The magnet motor itself consists of a large ferrite magnet that surrounds a pole piece made with a unique combination of iron and SMC. The iron ferrite forms the lower base of the pole cylinder, topped off with a 10mm SMC disk to crown the pole piece. The combination minimizes the negative effects of the iron, while placing the SMC disk right in the main working area of the four-layer voice coil. Such placement ensures the maximum effect from the SMC on the voice coils environment, resulting in a greatly improved constant flux field.

Custom-Made Tweeter
The 29mm ultra-light soft-dome tweeter is manufactured by Dali and has been developed specifically for Oberon Series. The large size of the membrane lets the tweeter generate higher sound pressure with less excursion, keeping the voice coil motion to a precise minimum. The oversized membrane is constructed based on an ultra-light wave weave fabric and additionally optimized for a larger bandwidth in its lower-frequency area. This ensures optimal handover from the midrange woofer to the tweeter, creating a well-balanced, unforced, and coherent upper midrange. Compared to most soft-dome tweeters, the dome material is less than half the weight (0.060 mg/mm2). The tweeter front plate near the dome is designed with similar geometry as Dali's Opticon and Rubicon tweeters to create the optimal working conditions for the soft dome. The aim is to combine an extended frequency response with wide dispersion and low coloration.

Attractive and Functional Cabinets
Oberon 1's cabinet construction is comprised of high-density CNC-machined MDF board dressed in carefully selected high-grade vinyl. The very rigid construction of the cabinet is due to solid bracings across the inside for reinforcement. This improves the stiffness and practically eliminates resonance within the cabinet. Dali optimized the timing by fitting the speakers with acoustic damping material internally along the sides, top and bottom. It creates a more direct contact between woofer and bass port. The audible result is a more precise bass and increased attack in the midrange. Bass ports are placed on the rear, enhancing room integration by utilizing the wall for improved bass performance. Above the bass port, you'll find a key hole for on-wall mounting.
