Obsessed with Detail and Design: Japanese-Built Luxman PD-151 Mark II Turntable Plays LPs with Exquisite Clarity and Fullness, Features LTA-309 Tonearm

You could say that the obsessiveness with which Luxman approaches its PD-151 Mark II belt-drive turntable is overkill – unnecessary, even. But then, when you place an LP on its high-mass platter, lower the static-balanced S-shaped LTA-309 tonearm with SEAC technology, and listen to the level of heightened clarity, detail, tonality, balance, dynamics, and solidity from your records, you realize the logic and practicality of the Japanese company’s pursuits. The rationale can also be seen in the ‘table's elegantly Spartan exterior architecture. Able to be outfitted with an optional dust cover, PD-151 Mark II keeps indicator lights and buttons down to a minimum, with the front panel displaying controls only for power, on/off, and speed (33RPM, 45RPM, 78RPM). Three recessed set-screws enable independent pitch fine-tuning for each speed while guarding against accidental mis-adjustment.

Every part of PD-151 Mark II works towards one goal: Transparent music reproduction. Let’s start with the drive system. A sine wave/Pulse Width Modulation power supply provides ultra-stable direct current to a proprietary DC brushless motor, a high-torque design that continually monitors and maintains speed with a Proportional-Integrated-Drive feedback control loop. Additionally, an 8.8-pound machined-aluminum platter serves as a flywheel replete with very high moment of inertia. A stainless-steel, 0.63-inch-diameter spindle with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) thrust bearings and brass radial bearings delivers steadiness and longevity – as well as phenomenal stability and a wow and flutter rating of less than 0.04%.

To damp microphonics and suppress unwanted noise, an anti-resonant chassis complete with rubber isolation feet that supply up to 0.2 inches of independent height adjustment work with a nearly half-inch-thick machined aluminum top plate that suspends an underslung chassis for more weight and absorption. Inside the nearly 35-pound PD-151 Mark II, more rubber damping mounts isolate the chassis from the motor and power transformer.

Add to the aforementioned features a machined aluminum headshell, oxygen-free copper wiring, anti-skate adjustment, and a counterweight – as an EP adaptor, rubber turntable mat, and detachable power cable  – and PD-151 aces all analog parameters. Luxman's superior craftsmanship and three-year warranty put it over the top.

"It looks beautiful, feels beautiful, and is beautifully made; but most importantly, it also sounds beautiful."
—Stereophile, Class A Recommended Component

"I was deeply impressed with its sonic density, thrilling dynamic shifts, saturated tones, and realistic instrumental textures."
—Garrett Hongo, SoundStage! Ultra

LTA-309 Tonearm with Knife-Edge Bearing Technology

PD-151 MARK II is equipped with Luxman’s original static balance type tone arm, LTA-309, featuring knife edge bearing technology developed by the Japanese brand SAEC. The arm base is machined aluminum, which minimizes the contact area, mounted to suppress unwanted vibration while ensuring rigidity. In addition to basic adjustment mechanisms, such as stylus pressure and anti-skating, LTA-309 supports fine settings such as arm height adjustment. The S-shaped tonearm employs an H4 bayonet mount headshell.

Functional Beauty

This turntable's design embodies simplicity and functional beauty with a component layout that showcases the three major analog elements — the tonearm, drive motor, and platter — allowing each to achieve optimal performance. Operational controls, such as the power switch, ON/OFF switch, and rotation speed changeover, are all integrated into the front panel. While offering intuitive operability and easy visibility, the exquisite aluminum top panel combines with the matte black lower housing to create a stunning visual contrast.

Height-Adjustable Damping Insulators

Luxman has incorporated vibration-damping rubber with excellent temperature characteristics into the custom-designed insulator feet. They are engineered with up to five millimeters of independent height adjustment, which helps prevent feedback and external vibration transmission.

About Luxman

Founded in 1925, Luxman dates back to the early era of radio broadcasting and stands as one of the world's oldest consumer electronics companies. In the 1960s, when mass-market high fidelity largely abandoned vacuum tubes in favor of transistors, Luxman recognized the characteristic sonic warmth and musicality of tube reproduction. Luxman has continued to make tube amplifiers without interruption. In the 1970s and 80s, Luxman components earned international acclaim for their sumptuous music reproduction, meticulous engineering, robust build quality, and elegant design. Now based in Yokohama, Japan, Luxman offers a carefully curated range of high-end audio products for discerning music lovers in 48 different countries.
