European-Made Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evolution Features Carbon-Fiber Tonearm, Sumiko Cartridge, and Electronic Speed Selection

The overall appeal of the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evolution turntable can be summed up with one sentence: Accurate, engaging, dynamic, consistent, no-hassle analog playback does not get any better at this price point. Offering excellent performance, near plug-and-play operation, clean aesthetics, and knockout value, it comes loaded with entry-level audiophile features and high-grade parts devised to ensure proper playback of your LP collection. While most budget turntables are constructed with zero regard for tracking precision, build quality, or materials selection – and actually will ruin your vinyl due to improper operation and mechanics – Debut Carbon Evolution (known as EVO in Europe) stems from a company committed to high-end analog sound for more than three decades. It also continues a legacy of a model that has sold more than 1 million units worldwide since the late 1990s. Made in the European Union – no Chinese shortcuts here – and available in multiple color options, all finished in eight coats of lacquer, Debut Carbon Evolution stands as the no-brainer turntable choice in its cost class.

Equipped with an 8.6-inch, one-piece carbon-fiber tonearm with an integrated head shell, low-friction sapphire tonearm bearings, and a factory-mounted Sumiko Rainer moving-magnet phono cartridge, Debut Carbon Evolution arrives ready to delve into the grooves of vinyl records with impressive stability, solidity, and scrupulousness. The foundation of the 13-pound unit proves equally formidable (and non-resonant) in the form of a rock-solid MDF plinth, heavy 12-inch steel platter with TPE damping, TPE-damped motor suspension system with decoupled isolation, and height-adjustable vibration-resistant aluminum leveling feet. Inside, one-piece, continuously run, high-purity copper tonearm wiring and a shielded termination box supply the kind of purity required for producing the delicate signals and in-depth information embedded in LPs.

Equally important, Debut Carbon Evolution is a breeze to use. You don't need fancy set-up tools or an advanced degree to get it up and running. Onboard electronic speed selection for 33RPM and 45RPM mean that you'll be instantaneously listening – no adjustments or sliders required. A sophisticated power supply, Connect It E phono cable with attached ground wire, drive belt, and adapter for seven-inch singles all come standard. And, yes, Debut Carbon Evolution even features an adjustable acrylic dust cover for needed protection. Pro-Ject's two-year manufacturer warranty and our 100% Music Direct Satisfaction Guarantee take care of everything else.

"If there's a design parameter more crucial than a hi-fi component's ability to hold our attention and enable us to feel things, I don't know what it is. The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO does this consistently, emphatically, at an attainable price.... Highly recommended."
—Alex Halberstadt, Stereophile

"... Pro-Ject makes great-sounding gear at reasonable prices. The EVO is no exception, and I can easily recommend it to anyone looking for an entry-level turntable that'll perform for years to come. It's the sort of turntable that a first-time audiophile could build a system around, and not need to upgrade for a long while. To my ears, this is the one to beat."
—Drew Kalbach, The Absolute Sound

"The Debut Carbon EVO keeps our attention fixed with its keen ear for emotion.... For those in the market for a deck [at a reasonable price], the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO is a must listen."
What Hi-Fi?, five-star review

High-End Materials and Proven Engineering

The main platter, where you place the playing record, should be heavy and non-resonant. Debut Carbon Evolution approaches this problem by using a proven 12-inch steel platter lined around the outer edge with an anti-resonant thermo-plastic elastomer (TPE). The result is a heavier platter with minimal noise from the expertly engineered main bearing and sub-platter. The added rotational mass enhances the flywheel effect, yielding reduced wow & flutter and higher stability while damping vibrations. Debut Carbon Evolution also benefits from the huge range of product offerings from Pro-Ject, incorporating the special, TPE damped metal feet from the company's award-winning X1 turntable. Not only do the vibration absorbing feet help isolate the turntable, they are simple to adjust, and leveling the turntable is easy.

New Motor Suspension System

Motors vibrate, presenting a a challenge for turntable designers to overcome, as those vibrations can transfer to the tonearm and cartridge, negatively affecting the sound quality. Debut Carbon Evolution features a new motor suspension system that decouples the motor from the plinth to reduce the transfer of vibrations. Leveraging advanced TPE damping solutions and high-mass composite construction, the motor suspension system uses a steel plate and TPE decoupling to isolate the motor while still ensuring the spindle is perfectly aligned with the sub-platter for rock-solid speed stability and smooth transfer of rotational force.

Automatic Speed Selection

Debut Carbon Evolution has a sophisticated power control circuit that generates a very precise signal to ensure accurate and consistent speed regardless of power fluctuations. No need for adjustment; no need for gimmicky lights and sliders. Electronic speed switching is cleverly integrated into the power switch, under the front left corner, which also maintains the sleek ergonomic design.

Sumiko Rainier Cartridge and Shielded Tonearm Wiring

Vinyl playback starts with the cartridge, converting the three-dimensional microscopic grooves to an electrical signal. The Sumiko Rainier phono cartridge combines superb trackability with uncanny accuracy and clarity without sacrificing smoothness. Factory mounted and aligned on a 8.6-inch low-mass carbon-fiber tonearm, Rainier offers a replaceable stylus which can be easily upgraded to a Sumiko Olympia or Sumiko Moonstone in a matter of seconds. No need to replace the cartridge, reset the alignment, or rebalance the tonearm. The signal from Rainier is transmitted via one-piece, high-quality copper wiring direct to high-quality RCA connectors, with a completely separate ground, preserving the balanced signal from the cartridge output. Debut Carbon Evolution is supplied with Connect It E, a semi-balanced, low-capacitance cable, with superior shielding designed for turntables.
