Cambridge Audio Azur 851A Integrated Amp

Award-Winning Azur 851A Champions Power, Versatility, Ultra-Low Distortion, Super-Fine Detail, Audiophile Components: Class XD Technology the Best of Both Class A & B Operation

Power, finesse, flexibility, astonishingly low distortion: Cambridge Audio's Azur 851A exemplifies what you audiophiles want (and need) in an integrated amplifier. Bolstered by proprietary Class XD technology to produce even greater musical detail, and capable of delivering 120 watts of high-quality power into 8 ohms (200W into 4 ohms), it benefits from two oversize audiophile-grade toroidal transformers—one for the sensitive preamp section and one for the power stages. This incredible speaker-taming amount of power can be precision-controlled with an innovative, fully balanced silicon gate volume control controllable in 1dB steps, which yields very fine adjustment across the volume range and highly accurate channel balance. The ability to set any input to fixed gain even turns Azur 851A into a power amplifier in a multichannel system.

"Frankly, the feature set of the 851C and 851A is the stuff of high-end audio dreams, but packaged in sensibly-priced components... As is so often the case with products from Cambridge Audio, what you're getting is cutting-edge technology for substantially less than high-end prices."
Hi-Fi News, Outstanding Product review

Because everyone's needs are different, Azur 851A offers two main types of connectivity: the more commonly found RCA/Phono inputs, plus two pairs of fully balanced XLR connections. Speaking of versatility, you can even control your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using the 851 Series remote control when they're docked in Cambridge Audio's matching iD100 digital dock. And that's just the beginning of this award-winning component's options. A second XLR input, customizable display, separate transformer taps for the left and right channels, twin rectifiers and separate PSUs for dual-mono operation of the left and right power amplifiers, and separate toroidal transformer supplies in the preamp—making 851A a pre/power amp combination in one box—make this standout musical instrument capable of answering practically any demand with resounding success.

"The [851 Series] now compete with the very best in class when it comes to sound and are pretty much in a league of their own when it comes to features... This refined and revealing pair delivers a dynamic, clean and engaging result."
Hi-Fi Choice, Recommended review

The heart of the Azur 851A beats via Cambridge Audio's Class XD design, created to offer the optimum sound quality currently available from existing amplifier configurations while retaining the high power levels required for truly dynamic performance. Class XD (crossover displacement) gives the benefits of pure Class A operation at low levels and eliminates the distortion associated with conventional Class B operation, as the fragile audio signal passes though the zero crossing point from transistor to transistor. Distinct from Class AB, XD feeds a controlled current into the output stage in such a way that the usual Class B crossover points no longer occur either side of zero volume but displaced to a point where the transfer functions of the transistors are better matched. The result is a smooth and linear transition between the two key operating modes, Class A and B.

"So while the 851C DAC/player brings a quiet composure to the party, the 851A is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a muscular amp that grips the speakers and serves up tight, powerful and extended bass. In the 851C and 851A you’re getting cutting-edge technology for substantially less than high-end prices. Add the best speakers you can afford and this two-channel system will deliver a taste of hi-fi heaven."
– European Imaging and Sound Association, Best Two-Channel System Product Award

To guard against damage, Cambridge Audio also instilled the Azur 851A with its CAP5 protection technology for trouble-free operation and to prevent clipping and DC overcurrents. The integrated amp will simply turn itself down before any damage occurs to it or your speakers. An acoustically damped full-metal chassis with a thick, brushed-aluminum front panel rounds out what is a legitimate audiophile masterwork. 100% Money-Back Guaranteed.
