Dark Side of the Moon Turns 50: Anniversary Box Set Features Newly Remastered Studio Album on Vinyl, Blu-ray, and DVD-A Plus Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974 and Two Books
One of the most iconic and influential albums of all time, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon has turned 50! Primarily developed during live performances with the band premiering an early version of the suite several months before they entered the studio, the group's eighth album was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road studios) in London and originally released in March 1973. The iconic album packaging, which depicts a prism spectrum, was designed by Hipgnosis' Storm Thorgerson. The Dark Side Of The Moon has sold over a staggering 50 million copies worldwide.
Housed in an elaborate package and filled with collectible ephemera, the set includes a 160-page hardcover book of era-specific photography as well as two 45RPM singles; a pair of Blu-ray discs with Atmos, 5.1, and high-res stereo mixes; and a DVD-A with the original album presented in 5.1 and remastered stereo. But there’s much more: A 76-page notated songbook allows you to play along to record while a replica of the pamphlet and invitation to the band’s preview of the LP at the London Planetarium in February 1973 serves as a time machine.
But the biggest surprise is the the live performance of the album in its entirety, captured at London’s Wembley Stadium, and presented on both CD and vinyl. Pressed with quiet surfaces, the Live at Wembley Empire Pool vinyl sounds incredible and is very well recorded, sounding nothing like old bootlegs. This is a fully produced live album and well worth the price of admission.
