Zenph’s innovative re-performance process precisely replicates the original recording, turning it into a nuanced live performance. Listeners are now able to go back to the moment of creation and experience Gould’s playing as if you were in the room when the original recording was made.
Zenph Studios has created a note-perfect re-performance of Glenn Gould's iconic 1955 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations exactly as he played it more than 50 years ago, by combining mathematics, technology and musical artistry. This new recording sounds as fresh, vibrant, and intelligent as it was the day Gould originally played it - with one enormous difference - it is no longer trapped in the monaural sound of 1955. This gets Music Direct's Highest Recommendation!
What is a Zenph Re-Performance?
Zenph takes audio recordings and turns them back into live performances, precisely replicating what was originally recorded. The software-based process extracts and encodes the details of how each note was played, including musical nuances such as volume, articulation and pedal actions. The encoding is played back on an acoustic grand piano fitted with sophisticated computers and hardware, allowing listeners to experience the performance as if they were in the room when the original recording was made. This re-performance is then recorded afresh using the latest recording techniques. The result is a sonic rediscovery of an iconic twentieth-century recording.
The Goldberg Variations have been recorded afresh in state-of-the-art sound on a new Sony BMG Masterworks disc. The hybrid SACD/CD includes versions tailored for surround sound and headphone listening. This is the first of a series of discs by classical and jazz piano masters culled from the label’s archives, including Sergei Rachmaninoff and Art Tatum.
