Steely Dan Gaucho on Limited Edition Japanese Import SHM-SACD
Steely Dan doesn't require any introduction, particularly not to anyone alive during the 1970s or audiophiles that followed the group's every movement since. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen not only made inimitable music by bending jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and clever narratives into cerebral songs notable for eccentric twists and complex structures, they completely redefined what was possible to achieve in the recording studio.
Sonically, Steely Dan were perfectionists, the results documented on a celebrated string of albums still prized for their fidelity, obsessiveness, and technical detail. Having it both ways via incredible sound and engrossing art, Becker and Fagen became the era's antiheroes as well as their generation's Phil Spector.
Gaucho, released in 1980, was Steely Dan's last until the release of Two Against Nature twenty years later. The album has all the Steely Dan trademarks: impeccable production, cynical and venomous lyrics and undeniably catchy songs. "Babylon Sisters" opens the album with silky aplomb while the rest of well-oiled machine is anchored by further classics like "Hey Nineteen" and "Time Out Of Mind."
SHM-SACD (Super High Material SACD) is the ultimate Super Audio CD that utilizes the materials and technologies that were developed for the SHM-CD to further enhance the audio-resolution. These discs are made with polycarbonate developed for the screen of the liquid crystal display. As it has a higher transparency, players can read the signal more faithfully. Also, it excels in fluidity, which enables you to cast a more accurate pit. What works wonders for a low resolution format such as CD should offer even greater sonic improvements in a real high resolution format such as SACD.
