The Who Tommy on Hybrid SACD
This is the way it should be done! For the first time in the modern CD era, the original master tapes were located and used for re-mixing and re-mastering by Pete Townshend personally. (The 1996 MCA edition of Tommy which was re-mastered using the multi-track masters since the original tapes could not be found.) Jon Astley (Townshend's tape archivist) remarked '...everybody who was with me just couldn't believe the quality of the tape. It's really, really good...It's exactly the same album that we all know and love.' And the sound is absolutely incredible! The Who's instruments really sound like they should with Daltrey and Townshend's vocals being perfectly clear and you can really feel Entwhistle and Moon viscerally pounding out the rhythm together. If the re-mastered sound was the only improvement that would be sufficient but this 2-disc version adds so much more. Besides the detailed liner notes and dozens of photographs from the original sessions, there are more than a dozen additional tracks including previously unreleased songs (some originally intended for Tommy) and five stereo-only demos (four of which have never been released before). The two discs come packaged in a fold-out digipak housed in a protective plastic sleeve. This SACD set is essential listening and a 'must hear' as it really shows off the capabilities of SACD. First-class all the way!
