Description

The Highest-Performing Phono Cartridge in Ortofon's History: MC Century Represents the Peak of State-of-the-Art Analog, Plays Vinyl LPs with No Resonance and Features Superlative Tracking

Limited to 100 pieces worldwide, the Ortofon MC Century is unlike any other phono cartridge you've ever seen or heard. Yes, it's expensive. But musical instruments such as MC Century seldom come along. There are only so many cartridges that truly represent the state-of-the-art in analog, and MC Century meets every criterion while setting the bar for other manufacturers to follow. Designed to be the standard-bearer for Ortrofon design and ideals, MC Century features an SLM-made titanium housing and body, iron-cobalt alloy magnet system, nude Ortofon Replicant 100 diamond stylus, laser-machined diamond cantilever with crystal structure, and armature damping system. They combine to produce absolutely breathtaking sound and perform with utmost coherency. If you've ever dreamed of playing back LPs with absolutely no unwanted resonance, indescribably great responsiveness, see-through transparency, and practically unimaginable tracking accuracy, MC Century is the culmination of your wishes. Please read more about the highest of the highest-end technology and materials that elevate MC Century to new strata below. In the meantime, your ears and your records will be awaiting an experience few listeners will ever have the privilege of enjoying – all courtesy of MC Century.

“…It presented the best recordings ‘whole’ without obscuring detail. Its resolution of low-level information—hall reverberation and instrumental decays—was as good as I’ve heard from any cartridge, and better than most, without spotlighting.”
—Michael Fremer, Stereophile

The Highest Quality Materials
Using expensive ultra-pure oxygen-free copper allows for zero-loss transmission of the diamonds movements via the diamond cantilever. This combination combines low moving mass with an extremely high degree of rigidity. The specially designed precision moulded non-magnetic armature achieves an extreme precision in each coil turn in all layers. The armature design allows a very well-defined interface to the rubber absorbers. The material applied for the armature has very high strength and rigidity. The bottom cover is constructed from a special proprietary TPE (Thermo-Plastic Elastomer) material, which provides extremely high damping. A low output impedance of 6 ohm and a low output voltage of 0.2mV makes MC Century a perfect partner for most step-up transformers as well as active MC preamplifiers.

Cutting-Edge Analog Technology
MC Century's superlative damping capability comes courtesy of the Selective Laser Melting process in which fine particles of titanium are welded together, layer by layer, to construct a single piece body devoid of unnecessary material. Using this technique, the density of the body can be precisely controlled, allowing for extremely high internal damping. The final result provides absolute freedom from resonances existing in the cartridge body material and allows for MC Century to be perfectly matched with an extremely wide array of different tonearms. Because of the nature of SLM-based construction, each cartridge body is cosmetically unique and will show small dimples or lines under close examination.

Highlights
  • Cartridge housing and the body are made in titanium with SLM technique
  • High-performance iron-cobalt alloy applied for parts of the magnet system
  • Armature damping system provides complete elimination of unwanted resonance
  • Thin and light Ortofon Replicant 100 diamond, with extraordinarily large contact surface, results in tracing accuracy unparalleled by any other needle
  • Crystal structure and exceptional hardness of new diamond cantilever ensures the best possible interface between the stylus and the armature
  • Combination of nude Ortofon Replicant 100 diamond on diamond cantilever provides extremely responsive and transparent sound reproduction
