A pre-war country-blues artist (who also made a living as a baseball pitcher and a boxer) of the highest order known for his improvisational vocal style and driving playing, Bukka White, like many of his contemporaries had lived in obscurity for many years, until his massive talents were brought to light by the folk revival of the early 1960s. Originally issued in 1970, Parchman Farm (named after the prison he did time in for shooting a man) is a 14-track compilation of White's recordings from 1937 to 1940. "Pinebluff Arkansas," "Shake'em On Down," "Bukka's Jitterbug Swing," "Parchman Farm Blues" and "Special Streamline" are all diamonds amongst pearls.
